We have begun shipping the eGPU cards that we've been working on for years. (literally, I'm sad to say)

First proud owner has reported success, his nMP 6,1 is running 10.13.5 with no mods at all. And he will be installing Windows shortly and report on that.

Some quick notes for future customers:

1. Easiest to install the Nvidia drivers before you get the card.
2. Before install, type the following into terminal: sudo nvram enable-legacy-orom-behavior=1 (From Apple)
3. Plug the eGPU into the lower left TB port on the 6,1.
4. Connect a display directly to the properly powered eGPU. (all power pins connected)
5. Boot your nMP 6,1 and watch the display come to life.

​Once you have it set up, you can just treat the eGPU as being part of nMP. Boot screens, boot picker, etc are on the eGPU display. A separate blog post will cover Windows install, waiting to hear from Customer #1 how his Win experience goes before I write it up.

On June 4th, Nvidia released an update to enable DP1.3 and 1.4 on Maxwell and Pascal cards.

This includes everything from GTX750 on up. This is not a life-or-death update. But please do not run it on your MVC flashed cards. Our magic is in the EFI and it is doubtful that Nvidia has included a mechanism to maintain Mac EFI during this update.

So don't run theirs. We are busy building new versions of all our roms for this update. And since we have to bust open all  the old EFIs, we are going to do another fix.

As some have noticed, our EFI used to flash a tiny text debug window before boot. Then Apple decided to add APFS to 10.13 High Sierra. They enabled booting from APFS by adding it to the Mac Pro 5,1 Bootrom. Unfortunately, their implementation interfered with our card EFI. Nothing catastrophic, but more of a cosmetic issue and what feels like a delay during boot. This text has grown and slowed to a point where it is more distracting now.

The quick and easy fix is to remove all the APFS formatted drives. No more APFS disks, no more APFS text, and no more boot delay. We are going to combine this update with the Nvidia DP 1.3/1.4 update and roll it into future roms. To start, the 1070Ti will be our first new cards, and the first cards shipped with the updated rom.

We will also add GTX1050 and GTX1060 at that time as products, if they have proven stable in the Web driver. As we roll them into existing product lines these roms will also be available to past US customers as an update for a nominal fee and shipping. Please don't start asking, we'll announce when these are available. I am uncertain if our EU folks will be offering past update service or just new cards as they are written.

So, to reiterate, the new EFI will incorporate Nvidia's June 4th 2018 DP 1.3/1.4 update along with a cosmetic fix for Apple's recent APFS additions. The only people who might actually, desperately NEED this update are folks with cMP and and 8K. 

As usual, all the hacks, cracks, and other bozos selling pirated versions of our cards will continue offering unpatched older buggy versions, since they can't write their own EFI. If they would like to start licensing our work, now would be a good time to get in touch.

I have had a little disagreement with our Lead Software Engineer. I noticed that all of the other Macs certified for Mojave are 2012 or later. I'm pretty sure they all use the newer "Black" boot screen. I think the fact that the 5,1 has now been grouped with these 2012 and later machines means it should get a black boot screen. We have been testing this, it requires a known hack but looks really cool.

I like it. Lead Software Engineer doesn't. What do you guys think?

Between Mojave, eGPU, and iMac MXM cards we have had an uptick in demand.

Looking for some part time assistance in Hollywood, CA. We are near Runyon Canyon and the Dolby Theatre. (where they do that tedious Emmy thing).

Ideally someone(s) with computer knowledge and organized mind. Male or female, just be competent and have a reference or two.

In a perfect world this person or persons would have some knowledge of EFI oproms and Mac Intel machines. Self starter and intelligent is ideal.

Most tasks would be unpacking boxes, checking items into inventory, packing orders, and testing GPUs in various Macs.  Historic love of all things Cupertino a plus.

We have some EVGA 1080Ti SCX cards ready for eGPU.

These cards are set up for a few specialized machines. Primary is nMP 6,1, where these cards enable eGPU in OSX 10.1.3.4 or 10.13.5 or Win 10. You supply the enclosure and power.

Slide the card in, connect the TB2 cable, and your Mac Pro 6,1 has a 1080Ti at it's beck and call. Want to do some VR development or gaming in Windows? Just reboot with option key held down. Choose Win 10 and it boots up pretty as you please, as confirmed by Barefeats.com. He didn't call our eGPU cards "Breakthrough"  for nothing.

Instead of running a bunch of hacks, cracks, scripts, and system level mods, you just type in a single line in terminal before booting up with your new eGPU. It JUST WORKS.

These cards also work flawlessly in 2016 MBP 13" with function keys or 2014 Mini or 2011 iMac 27". Can't say what else they work with as we don't have all Macs.

New Era for eGPU, these function just like the TB3 Macs with eGPU AMD cards. They "Just Work".

Note: if you have any of the code kiddy hacks, cracks, warez, or scripts, you need to remove them. Our cards only work with a stable, stock system.

The 4,1/5,1 Mac Pro just won again. They will be the only Pre-2012 Macs to run Mojave with no hacks, cracks, or scripts. The only asterisked footnote was "with Metal Capable GPU".

Wonder where you could get one of those?

Well of course our GTX1080Ti will do, but not everyone needs that much horsepower.

And then I remembered, we have low cost GT640 cards that are direct and perfect replacement for GT120. No power cables needed. Some even have same ports as a GT120. For someone running a GT120 and a 24" or 27" Apple Display via MDP, as simple as ordering a DP GT640 and a $10 DP to MDP adapter. BINGO...up and running Mojave while all of the other 2009-2011 era Macs look sadly on with their ancient, non-ferrous GPUs soldered firmly to their logic boards.

We even have a GT630 with Dual DP ports, can run two of those Apple displays or even a Dell UP2715K . Any of these cards can drive a 4K display via DP port, though they won't show a boot screen higher than 2560x1440.

For those who want or need a 4K boot screen, we offer a GTX750Ti. These come in "power cable needed" and "no power cable needed" versions.

​Of course, all of our Nvidia cards further up the line are also Metal capable. Another great year for 4,1/5,1. Now let's hope those guys working on the hack to let them run the 4.4 Ghz Xeon solve it...

We may run a discount coupon, I just need to figure out a good riddle.

As expected, all of our cards work the same in 10.13.5 as they did in 10.13.4. Even the "it Just Works" eGPU cards.

Quick reminder, 10.13.5 has dropped, along with Security Updates for 10.11 and 10.12.

If you are using an Nvidia card that requires their Web Drivers please wait a day or two to run any of these updates. Nvidia typically has drivers out within 24 hours, though not sure how this being nearly the weekend will impact that.

If you have already run the update, you will be seeing  some odd screen redraws, etc if you have a card with our EFI. If you don't have our EFI you aren't reading this on the affected Mac because it can only display black screens !

If you are desperate there are ways to hack the old drivers to work. I have mentioned them in past blog posts.

​In any case, let's look forward to the new drivers by Monday.
