Is your 4,1 Mac Pro stuck on 17G65 or 17g66? The fix

1/5/2020

We were recently reminded that 4,1 Mac Pros, even with the 5,1 Firmware, can't natively run updates to 10.13. This can result in being stuck at 17G65 or even the dreaded 17G66 (no Nvidia drivers for 17G66)

The fix is simple, and was provided by DosDude, who has made life easier for Mac users running newer OS's.

Scroll to the bottom of the linked page and you'll see some FAQ's. Right above these he has a section called "Updates". The little script for download will allow you to use Software Update natively to get latest Security Patches. Simply download the script, open a terminal window and drag the script to it. Hit "Return" and you'll be asked for your admin password. Once entered, the script will run, and then ask if you'd like to have it check for updates.

At this point you can close the terminal window and Restart. Once booted back up, you'll be able to run the Security and OS updates normally, as Apple intended. The Nvidia driver updates will allow you to get their newer drivers as well.

Thanks again to DosDude, consider sending him a small donation for making our lives so simple.

I am running a 4,1 Mac Pro patched to 5,1. I have never had any issue installing High Sierra or any of the updates and security patches. My GPU is a GTX980 which has worked like a champ (Thanks, MacVidCards!) and I always get prompted for the new NVIDIA webdriver after each update. I've never waited more than a day after Apple has released an update to get the latest webdriver. Never heard that there was an issue with 2009-2012 Mac Pros installing & running High Sierra....

With respect, not only do I not think you are affiliated with MacVidCards, but I have no intention of sending my card overseas in order to get a boot screen.

Yes, we are legit: http://www.macvidcards.com/blog/now-2-eu-distributors-for-mvc-cards - if you are from US use this site instead.

I see. I apologize for my suspicion. However, perhaps you could clear up why you seem able to flash any vendor, while the US distributor cannot?

Thank you for the tips that you mentioned above. Now, I know how to take care of my Mac even better. I have my own ways of taking care my stuff since this is the only Mac that I have. But after hearing your advices, I've learned so much and I will apply it on my own so that I can give my item a protection that it need. It's about time to upgrade and update things that should be updated. Hopefully, I will be able to do it the right way!

It might be impractical for some, but here is what worked for me:

I keep an up-to-date backup at all times, so I booted from it and re-ran the latest Security Update onto my prime drive*. When I rebooted, the dreaded 17G66 had turned into 17G10021, and the NVIDIA Driver Manager system pref automatically detected and installed the proper driver update.

All the stupid little (and big) display problems are gone, and CUDA loads again, too.
___
* I actually tested it by installing from prime to backup first, because I'm a cautious guy.

I am in the biggest cluster fuck you can ever be in...and I need your help on making my computer get back to a working beast.

I was on Sierra Os last night when I decided to update my computer. In the process I downloaded what I now know is the dreaded 1766. My flashed card is acting up and I’m looking to know which of the High Sierra Updates is still supporting flash and Nvidia cards and also wanting to know which video card drivers I should download.

A little help would make my life for I just got let go due to the corona virus and I need this computer to edit videos for I just got a freelance gig.

Try this link: https://support.apple.com/kb/DL2034?locale=en_EN

or just download full installer from AppStore directly and run it. It will make in place upgrade to the latest version.

TY VERY MUCH....

I got it to come back which is awesome, I am experiencing a few things and wanted to check to see if this is normal or not.

First:
Ghost Trails sometimes appear when I move the web browser around...

Second:
My Nvidia Driver Manager says that G-SYNC and ECC are not supported on this update and was curious to know if this is normal.

My next dumb question I want to ask is, could I update my Os to Mojave and still get working results or am I stuck at High-Sierra with this particular computer.

Make sure NVIDIA driver is installed and enabled properly. Dock must be translucent. Looks like it's not.

Do not update to Mojave, there are no NVIDIA drivers for this card. You need to stick to High Sierra and it's security updates.

Oh boy... After doing research I read that the Titan X is best you can put in the Mac 5,1. I got a good deal on eBay and popped it in and I can't see a signal to monitor. I got to download the web driver and it says that OS 10.13.6 isn't compatible with my (17G12034). I feel I'm going deeper into a hole... I've read the whole post here but am in a quandary as to what to do next. Does the card need to be "flashed" ? Is there a way to get it going? Appreciate your assistance... Ron

Just download latest High Sierra version using this patcher: http://dosdude1.com/highsierra/ then run the installer and do in-place upgrade without loosing current data. Finally install latest NVIDIA drivers: https://images.nvidia.com/mac/pkg/387/WebDriver-387.10.10.10.40.135.pkg and CUDA driver: https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/cuda/418_163/macosx-cuda-418_163-driver/

Is it less of a headache if I have a 4,1 Mac Pro & MacVidCards GTX 780 6gb to just stay in El Capitan/Resolve 15, rather than flash & make the leap to high Sierra with Resolve 15 or maybe 16? Is the performance & overall reliability better in El Capitan or HS with Davinci Resolve? Finally, I could also change graphics cards, flash to 5,1 and go to Catalina/Resolve 16. Which is the most reliable course for primarily 2K cinema dng work in Resolve, incl general editing and grading?

Currently Running OSX El Capitan Version 10.11.6
Mac Pro (Early 2009) 2x 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 6144 MB from MacVidCards

Thanks for any advice and the great card that has served me well. Stay safe out there, JB

New driver is out, and has been installed on my mac several times. Mac pro 2009 8 cores
5.1 - firmware upgraded with what came with the last high sierra installation. But there is no way the kext are loaded so far.

Re-install the driver and during the install when it pauses, go to Security & Privacy system pref and Allow the kext to be installed.

Hey, I just did the dosdude patch on my flashed 4,1 since I had been stuck on 17G65. Now I'm on 17G14033. The driver detected the update and updated to .139. However now I have the laggy graphics and non-translucent dock.

What would you do about that?

Just click NVIDIA logo on the top bar and choose NVIDIA Web Driver then reboot.

hm... It's already on web driver and I've tried a restart. :/ Could it be anything else?

Make sure NVIDIA driver is not blocked in system preferences pane. Looks like partially installed driver.

I can't see anything in my system preferences. It would be unter "security and privacy" in the general tab, right? Should I try to re-install? Maybe uninstall first?

Yes, try uninstalling and installing again - it should look like this if something is not fully allowed: https://rolandus.zendesk.com/hc/article_attachments/360010872072/mceclip5.png

Also try resetting NVRAM, then enable the driver again.

In the process of the installation I didn't get a prompt, but when I opened the system preferences it did show "Some system software was blocked from loading.". The only problem is, that nothing happens when I click allow, even with the lock in the bottom unlocked. However the installation just finished anyway, so I'm going to restart and see what happens now.

Matthis
11/4/2020 02:19:46 pm

Ok, after the restart the system preferences gave me the option to allow Nvidia and prompted another restart. Now it seems to be working. Thanks for the help!!!
