iMac cards coming !

5/17/2018

So it appears that many iMacs with MXM cards are experiencing issues with dying cards.

We are going to jump in and do something about this. To begin we will offer direct replacement AMD cards. But as soon as our nifty new (OK, old) 27" iMac with 6970 gets here we will be working on Kepler cards from Nvidia. These run cooler and offer better performance.

We will  be curious what the ,market will bear. With help from our brilliant staff programmer (Netkas) we could offer Maxwell/Pascal MXM cards. Question is, will anyone pay for these? Value of a 27" iMac of this era is below what any of these cards cost as PC cards so we will have to see.

Our European distributors will be authorized to sell these cards too. (One in UK, one in Poland) Please let us know if this is a product you want.

If anyone was successful installing/upgraded their AMD Radeon HD 6970M let me know. I see this site has people asking the same question but I do not see replies. This site is saying new cards are here but no direction to how to get it.

If it would be possible to upgrade to NVIDIA which works with Metal games I would be very interested :-)

I'd be interested in something like an MXM Nvidia GTX 680 for installing in a 27" late-2009 iMac to replace the 4850 it now has as well as for a mid-2010 21.5 iMac to replace the HD5670.
Nvidia GPUs are MUCH more interesting than AMD because they can run Mojave on older Macs using dosdude1's patcher because they do not need for SSL4.2.

Wow! Been years searching for this kind of solution!
Despite my 21.5 is running fine, I would consider a replace and (eventually) an nVidia upgrade.
At this very moment running the stock i5, 12 GB, a 240 SSD on the "third" port, and a 3GB Toshiba (with the proper "sensor cable") in the main bay.
Question is about size. Do those MXMs fit on a 21.5?

Reply
Adam Puk
1/8/2020 12:01:26 pm

The later MXM cards are slightly taller so hit the 3.5" HDD in a 21.5" iMac, but with a 2.5" SSD fitted they should squeeze in with a bit of settling.

Please, do this already! There are a lot of these imacs out there (mine is one of them) that just need a reliable video card, hopefully the same programming that works on high end Maxwell/Pascals will also work for lower end cards as well! A low end, cool running maxwell/pascal as a "forever fix" to the radeon 6x70 fiasco junk!

The Sonnet eGFX Breakaway Puck RX560 has a MXM card but worried since it is $399 if it will work or not and since you break the void stickers opening it up, that's a big risk.

For sure I want such a card, iMac 2010 and 2011 are very strong computer (mine is 2010, 4x i7 2.97Hz, still a beast).

I'm looking at 'Sonnet Puck' witch included AMD 560 or 570 MXM card and wonder if the card would be compatible.

Another way can be using a 'mini pcie x1 riser' plug on the airport port and a desktop gpu boardx16 and external monitor.

But for sure a MXM Mac flashed card, would be a perfect choice.

So it has been almost a year since you made this announcement. Are you working on this project? If you have decided not to, please tell us.
I don't think most of us are looking for a "hot rod" video card to play the latest games. We just want a faster card that has Metal support so we can keep up with the MacOS versions without patches. There should be a good market for a replacement card if you can make it compatible with the different versions of MXM. Price? I believe you would sell a lot under $200 and only a few at $400. I have no idea what your manufacturing cost would be. Please let us know where you are on this project.

Hi (Rominator/MVC ?) -

Definitely interested if you’re still into the project.

My 27” Late 2009 iMac i7 (i7-860) with HD4850 GPU finally died (after almost 10 years of always being on), and I’m not too interested in ditching a reasonably fast machine with nice upgrades if it can be repaired properly with your expertise (ie, with bootscreen and/or brightness adjustment!) GTX 765m/770m is more than enough replacement for me!

Like many, I own and wish to keep/upgrade my mid 2011 iMac 27" i7 with a failed AMD 6970. I think there will also be a substantial number of users that simply require a reliable future proof replacement for the defective original card rather than performance for gaming.

Thank you so much for giving us hope that we might hang on to our trusted machines.

Needless to say, I am very interested in purchasing one of your replacements, and so is my local Apple Service Provider. Please keep me updated. With regard to cost, I expect non-gaming users would be happy to spend around £180 delivered for such a card.

iMac'27 MID 2011
Core i7 3.4GHz
32GB RAM
AMD 6976 2GB
OS macOS Catalina Beta

GTX980M is not recognized.
I tried macOS High Sierra with the following settings, but did not recognize 980M.
-------------------------------------------
To make a non-apple provided Nvidia graphics card work in macOS Sierra you need to do the following…

Start the computer in safe mode by holding shift.

Get your BoardID by running this command in terminal

echo "<result> $ (ioreg -rd1 -c IOPlatformExpertDevice | awk -F '[" | "]' '/ board-id / {print $ 4}') </ result>"

Open the AppleGraphicsControl Kext using this command

sudo nano /System/Library/Extensions/AppleGraphicsControl.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleGraphicsDevicePolicy.kext/Contents/Info.plist

Use the arrow keys to go down until you see <key> ConfigMap </ key> followed by a bunch of keys and strings.

LOOK FOR YOUR BOARD ID…

IF IT IS LISTED: Change the string to <string> none </ string>

IF IT IS NOT LISTED: Add it in the same format as the ones listed.

Save the file by pressing Ctrl + O, then enter.

Exit by pressing Ctrl + X

Rebuild the kernel cache using the following two commands:

sudo kextcache -system-prelinked-kernel

AND

sudo kextcache -system-caches

I want to recognize 980M somehow, is there anyone who succeeded?

Hey, Quick update. I never found anyone willing to help and as I made pretty clear I couldn't finish this myself. It's unfortunate as I know people wish this was done. But I don't have the time or space to do it myself.

This will require editing DCB tables and doing LOTS more testing. Right now I can provide an EFI boot screen on 780M but without Web Driver it is black screen, so only useful for 10.13.6. And the TB port doesn't work right for display, etc. This is far from finished and realistically I'm never going to finish myself.

If you have the space and machines and can talk DCB tables, get in touch.

Would love to be able to replace the GPU card in my sons mid 2010 21.5" iMac which now runs an i7 680S CPU with 16Gb DDR3 and a 1TB SSD. It still runs good but is limited by the graphics card, with only 512Mb VRAM and no metal support so stuck with Mac OS High Sierra (which is soon to be unsupported). If somebody can write a video card vbios hack to allow a normal boot process for either an Nvidia or AMD MXM video card with VRAM above 1Gb it would be awesome for 21.5" and 27" iMac owners like myself.

I would buy two GPU's.

I have tried an AMD RX 480M, which is a perfect fit for the heat sink, it has a very similar layout to the HD 6970M, but the system would not boot, fans kept starting and stopping. Switch back to HD 6970M and it booted straight up.

I hope you come up with a solution.
