Beware the 108 driver, requires attention

8/31/2018

I started getting emails when 387.10.10.10.40.108 dropped, and since then I tried to install it myself.

(Sad Trombone Sound here)

This email sums up the issue nicely:

Issue:

I recently updated my drivers to the 387.10.10.10.40.108 when they became available in my Nvidia driver App. After the routine update thats had no issues before, I noticed the mac dock turned solid white instead of being transparent. The system became very sluggish as well. Graphic issues for sure. So I uninstalled the driver and returned to the previous driver I was using, 387.10.10.10.40.105. Still the issue remained.

I tried purging the ram and restarting and leaving the computer unplugged for a while before turning the power back on. Still the same issue. I do not have any other gpu installed.

I did see some similar sounding issues on the blog but I’m not sure if it’s the same problem or not.

Any suggestions or help would be appreciated.

Basically, we are leaving the 10.13 Web Drivers like we began them. With a very picky installer/OS combo prone to "white dock syndrome".

When I installed 108 via the Nvidia Control Panel, I got a "Metal Error" on next boot. Then the Finder began an endless crashing cycle. Switching back to Apple Default drivers let me get to desktop, but only because I was using a GT630. A flashed Titan Xp also got to desktop, but had white dock and when windows were moved they left trails.

So, once again we have some sort of library validation error, just like 10.13's first Web Driver.

Here is how I fixed:

0. If you are in boot loop or finder crashing, do a PRAM reset, will kick it back to default OS driver. EFI flashed cards will work on next boot with software rendering, non-EFI will stay black.

1. Use terminal to verify that CSRutil is running. Type "csrutil status". If it is not enabled, it needs to be. Resetting PRAM will do this, or you can boot into Recovery and turn it on there. "csrutil enable" will work there, but lot quicker to PRAM it. Will also blow out any other oddities in the NVRAM.

2. If you have already installed a broken/borked 108, open the Driver Control Panel and use your admin password to enable the "Uninstall" button on lower right. Hit it and run the uninstaller. It should force a reboot at end, if not do one anyway.

3. Next boot, first open the Security & Privacy Control Panel. Choose the "General" tab. Hit the Padlock so you can mod the status after entering password. If you haven't already allowed "App Store and Identified Developers" to run, do so now. Keep this window open off to the side.

4. Run the 108 Installer again. At some point you should see a. notice pop up on the "Security" control panel stating that Nvidia has been blocked. Hit "Allow" and it should be all good.

5. Come back here and post your results.

I received the 108 update through NVIDIA's update system.
While installing it for my macvidcards GeForce 980Ti on my MacPro5,1 I got a prompt to approve the kernel extension, so I went to the Security prefpane to do it. However immediately after clicking the allow button the system panicked. After rebooting it was sluggish, buggy, unaccelerated with drawing issues when moving windows, etc. It was never itself after that point. I tried uninstalling 108 and reinstalling 105, but the issue persisted. No other driver works with 17G65 so, I wasn't sure what to try next.

Finally after reading this blog post I decided to try again and after another round of uninstalling / pram reset / reinstalling 108 with kext approval in Security preferences I finally got graphics working properly again. Thanks for the suggestions that helped me kick my Mac Pro out of its semi-coma!

It looks like NVIDIA pulled the 108 driver from the update URL ( https://gfe.nvidia.com/mac-update ), likely because of problems with this update. I have no idea what problems version 108 was supposed to fix but it obviously introduced some new ones.

Maybe you should do like NVIDIA and remove the 108 link. Even though it is apparently possible to get back to a working state after getting to such a bad state, the 108 version is still toxic.

NOPE

This fix did nothing for me. Was back and forth with tech support wit nvidia for 12 hours yesterday, and the problem still persists. Have done full fresh install of OS from both backup set AND fresh from Apple.

I do NOT get the "allow" button to show up in security prefs. Definitely ran through all the terminal steps listed, even did a manual uninstall through Single User mode.

Nothing. Nada.

At my wit's end here.

My issues were very minor. Upon installing the 108 driver, I got the "Gatekeeper" install/OK window, and was slow to react to it. Upon restart, no acceleration. Went to "Security & Privacy" loaded the errant extension and restarted and voila, everything back to normal. So, to get this to work, you MUST install the extension.

Since install, 3 days now, I find the new driver fast and stable. NO ISSUES at all!!!!

Didn't work at first also the security window closed during the install not allowing me to "allow"NVIDIA. When I rebooted everything was the same. I opened my security pane and then it said NVIDA had been blocked, I then allowed it, uninstalled the driver again and rebooted and this time everything was OK apart from the fact I still cannot use 2X1080tis. With both cards powered my mac pro 5.1 12 core 3.46 ghz doesn't fully boot and the screen goes black. Thanks for this fix anyway!

I have the same problem with 2xTitan Xs (Maxwell) cards. The only driver I've found to work with dual cards is 378.10.10.10.25.106 with 10.13.6. Hopefully by the time Mojave releases Nvidia can fix this.

Hi,
I have got the same problem and was able to solve by reinstalling precedent driver, deactivating it, reboot, deinstalling and installing 108 with extension enabling…
For some here it could maybe useful to try deactivate Gatekeeper. Have a read there: http://osxdaily.com/2016/09/27/allow-apps-from-anywhere-macos-gatekeeper/
Hope this helps

Mac Pro 5.1 with flashed GTX 980 been running flawlessly for 3 years, updates no problem until 108 !! Same problem sluggish, repeating windows in the background etc etc... Still in contact with Nvidia support, tried everything. They said to reinstall 105 after cleaning everything via Terminal - still the same.

I had the same problems of trailing windows and opaque dock after installing 108 drivers. Even after uninstalling 108 and reinstalling 105, the problems persisted. I followed the above instructions and reinstalled 108 and all is perfect now. The key step was allowing the KEXT to load in the Security and Privacy preference pane after 108 installation restart. Then reboot one more time. I'm running a Mac Pro 5,1 with a GTX680.

Are you able to drive more than one screen with this drivers with your GTX 980 ?

(Issue that appeared with 10.13.6)

I had to do it twice but the procedure worked for me! 108 driver appears to be running normal now.

I may have done some stuff out of order so give it a couple tries and make sure to unblock the Nvidia pop up in the security panel.

Thanks for this. Followed the instructions and it didn't work the first time because of gatekeeper, but after allowing the extension and then uninstalling and reinstalling again it seems to be working. Thank you!

I went through the steps listed above in the original post and was able to get my card working as it should. Of course after the fact I noticed that the driver was pulled. But now that my system is stable I'm probably just going to keep running the 108 driver, unless it gets wonky, at least until they release the official version.

The procedure described worked for me, re-installing WebDriver-387.10.10.15.15.108 and CUDA Driver Version: 396.148 on my MacPro3,1 with GeForce GTX 770 4096 MB running High Sierra 10.13.6..

On a backup disk running El Capitan 10.11.6 I also installed WebDriver-346.03.15f16 and CUDA 8.0.90.

In preliminary checking the El Capitan installation seems to work OK. The High Sierra version has problems running Photos and iMovie.

In High Sierra, Photos displays images as expected. When Edit is entered, Photos becomes unresponsive and Activity Monitor shows what looks to me like two or three rogue processes consuming 200% or 300% cpu. In my experience the only way to get cpu use back to normal is to Force Quit Photos.

In High Sierra, when iMovie is launched, a dialog announces "Graphics configuration not supported. This graphics configuration does not support hardware acceleration, which is required to run iMovie".

I believe Photos and iMovie use OpenGL, which is generally said run better on AMD cards. However, Photos and iMovie seem to run OK in El Capitan, suggesting that they should also run in High Sierra. I suspect this loss of function is why WebDriver-387.10.10.15.15.108 was pulled.

Speculating, if in Mojave Photos and iMovie are recoded to use Metal, this problem will go way when Mohave is released, at least for users who upgrade. Diversion of attention to new versions might also at least partially explain the current release of buggy drivers.

For now it seems better to use some earlier driver version, even if WebDriver-387.10.10.15.15.108 can be installed.

Basically I thought whether I could not solve this problem unless the firewall was turned on by security and privacy settings.
This setting is off by default, is not it?
By repeating this several times, the notification pop-up on the "Security" control panel is displayed so that you can select "Allow".
Sorry if I made a mistake, but I did it like that.

Above I posted that following the instructions at the beginning of this thread allowed me to successfully install WebDriver-387.10.10.15.15.108. On re-reading those instructions I see a clarification is needed. Resetting the PRAM allowed me to install the Nvidia driver, to select the driver in the Nvidia Driver Control Panel, and for my choice of Nvidia to remain after starting my Mac. However, I never got a notice from the Security control panel that Nvidia had been blocked, and so never had the option to Allow it. Still, the Nvidia drivers seemed to load, even though there were problems in graphics in Photos and iMovie and other places.

On re-reading the instructions, I see the purpose of the PRAM reset was to insure that CSRutil is running. In Terminal I type "csrutil status" and my Mac returns
"System Integrity Protection status: disabled."

My Mac is a MacPro3,1. I am able to run macOS Sierra, High Sierra or Mojave only thanks to the workarounds provided by dosdude1.com. Instructions for those macOS installations say

"Make sure SIP is disabled on the system you intend to install High Sierra on. If it's not or you're unsure, just boot into your Recovery partition of your currently installed copy of OS X, open Terminal, and run "csrutil disable"."

This looks to me like a major conflict. Running macOS requires SIP disabled. Installing Nvidia web drivers requires SIP enabled.

If someone can help me understand how this is supposed to work I would greatly appreciate the help.

My comment that this works was incorrect. My choice of the Nvidia web driver did remain selected after restart, but Photos was unstable, and iMovie would not launch. iMovie displayed a dialog stating hardware acceleration was required but not present. Trying to work through this issue I reset the Driver Manager back to Default macOS Graphics. Now when I try to choose Web Driver, my choice is reset back to Default macOS Driver on restart. In all of this the security control panel never asked to Allow the Nvidia extensions.

All OK now. I think my problem was buggy nvidia web drivers.

In macOS 10.13.6 i removed the web drivers and still had problems. I reinstalled 10.13.6 over the existing system 10.13.6. Afterwards, the Apple drivers worked with only small glitches.

On a different SSD I cloned my 10.13.6 system using CCC, then upgraded the clone to Mojave 10.14.1. For several days, everything has worked very well.

Mac Pro 5.1
GTX-680 with "factory" flash

I've tried the procedure several times, with 105, but the Security control panel never asks me to authorize the driver. I've also noticed that although the nVidia Driver Manger get's installed, the Cuda Preferences are still there. Maybe because I did a separate update of the Cuda? Anyway, seen no way around the White Dock issue. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Heads up everyone,

Just installed the latest security patch for OSX 10.13.6 with the Nvidia 105 driver recommended by DP. Im running a flashed GTX1070 from MVC.
Upon reboot, 105 driver is shown as "incompatible" and now will not load. Stuck with generic OSX graphics driver.
Anyone else seen this issue?
More importantly anyone have an idea how to fix it?

Thanks

Chuck

Thank you for posting this very informative article. I have been trying to determine when large, flat concrete gravestones were first used in New Orleans cemeteries. I have found two for 1905 burials but I don't know if the stones were laid at the time of burial. They are slab-like with small marble name plaques attached. Have you run across any similar gravestones in your New Orleans research?

You should use the right colors to enhance mood and create a comfortable environment. You want to choose colors that reflect your personality, whether it’s calm or energetic, etc. In general, darker colors give off a calming effect while lighter colors tend to generate more activity and excitement.
