Do I Need An Additional Power Supply?
The majority of our products can run safely off of the Mac Pro's Logic Board, but a few graphics cards draw too much power to rely on the Mac Pro's power supply alone. These items should be used with an additional power supply (PSU). Currently the list includes:
Nearly any PC PSU can be used. An ideal PSU will provide a minimum of 300W and have a combination of 6-pin and 8-pin PCIe connectors. Since you will not be connecting this PSU to your Mac Pro's Logic Board directly the PSU needs to be triggered manually. This can be done with "The Paper Clip Trick."
We at MacVidCards simply sit our PSUs on the desk next to our Mac Pros, but that isn't an optimal arrangement for some users.
